San Francisco Housing Vacancy Statistics

12.2% of San Francisco's homes were vacant when the Census surveyed them. The rental vacancy rate is 6.7% and the homeowner vacancy rate is 1.0%.

A home counts as vacant if nobody lived in it when the survey came by. Most of those homes are empty for ordinary reasons: they are between tenants, sold and waiting for the buyer to move in, or used for part of the year. The Census records the reason, and each one has its own ranking here.
