San Francisco Neighborhood Safety Ratings

78.7% of San Franciscans feel safe walking alone in their neighborhood during the day, and 59.7% at night, according to the city's resident survey for 2026.

The City Survey asks San Franciscans how safe they feel walking alone in their own neighborhood, once for the daytime and once for night. These rankings show the share who answer safe or very safe. It measures how safe people feel, which is not the same thing as a crime rate.

Safety rankings for 35 neighborhoods

Each ranking lists every neighborhood against the citywide figure, which is the number shown on the card. Citywide figures for every measure are on the neighborhood ratings overview.

Feeling safe by day and by night

Citywide, the share who feel safe drops from 78.7% in daylight to 59.7% after dark. The gap is wider in some neighborhoods than others, which the two rankings show.
