San Francisco Homeownership and Renter Statistics

61.8% of occupied homes in San Francisco are rented and 38.2% are owner-occupied, according to the American Community Survey for 2020-2024. Only 13.8% of households headed by someone under 35 own their home, against 51.9% of those 65 and over.

Most San Francisco households rent, but the split is different in every neighborhood. The renter share and homeownership rate rankings are the same list read from opposite ends. The rest sort households by the age of the person who heads them: how many own their home at each age, and how old the city's renters are.

Renters made up 62.0% of occupied homes in 2005 and 63.3% in 2024. These are annual one-year survey figures, so the latest point (63.3% in 2024) differs a little from the five-year figure at the top of the page.
