How many neighborhoods are in San Francisco?

San Francisco officially has 41 neighborhoods. That is the count the city's Planning Department uses for its Analysis Neighborhoods, which are built from whole census tracts so city agencies can report data by neighborhood.

Three of the 41 are parks with few or no homes: Golden Gate Park, Lincoln Park and McLaren Park. That leaves 38 residential neighborhoods, and this site has a housing profile for each of them.

You will see much higher counts elsewhere because many places people call neighborhoods are smaller areas inside the official ones. Dogpatch is part of Potrero Hill, Cole Valley is part of Haight Ashbury, and Duboce Triangle and Eureka Valley are part of Castro/Upper Market. Real estate maps and local guides name these smaller areas separately, so their lists run longer without being wrong.
